In the first half of 2023, a new situation emerged in China's wood manufacturing industry

In the first half of 2023, a new pattern of wood manufacturing has emerged: the plywood and fiberboard industry has seen a decline in the number of enterprises and a contraction in capacity, while the particleboard industry has seen a decline in the number of enterprises and rapid growth in capacity.
According to the China Forest Products Industry Association, as of the end of June 2023, the production capacity of plywood, fiberboard and particle board has changed as follows:
Plywood: There are more than 9,800 plywood products manufacturers in China, a decrease of nearly 1,000 compared with the end of 2022; Total production capacity was 205 million cubic meters per year, down 1.4% from the end of 2022. The plywood industry has seen a double decline in the number of companies and production capacity.
Fiberboard（MDF/HDF）: There are 287 fiberboard manufacturers in the country, with 321 fiberboard production lines and a total production capacity of 46.93 million cubic meters per year, down 1.8% from the end of 2022. Among them, in the first half of 2023, two fiberboard production lines were newly built and put into operation, increasing the annual production capacity by 360,000 cubic meters. There are a total of 134 continuous flat pressing lines, with a total production capacity of 29.68 million cubic meters per year, accounting for 63.2% of the total production capacity. The number of enterprises, the number of production lines and the overall production capacity of the fiberboard industry have shown a further downward trend.
Particleboard: There are 290 particleboard manufacturers in the country, with 306 particleboard production lines and a total production capacity of 43.75 million cubic meters per year, an increase of 5.5% over the end of 2022. Among them, 14 particleboard production lines were newly built and put into use in the first half of 2023, with an annual new production capacity of 2.91 million cubic meters. There are a total of 98 continuous flat lines, with a total production capacity of 26.25 million cubic meters per year, accounting for 60.0%. The number of enterprises and production lines in the particleboard industry has further decreased, while the total production capacity continues to increase. At present, there are 53 particleboard production lines under construction in China, with a total production capacity of 17.64 million cubic meters per year, and the risk of overheating of investment in the particleboard industry increases. In the future, with the changes in domestic and foreign demand and the implementation of various sanctions, the pattern of domestic wood products may change, which requires the close attention of your peers.
