  • The manufacturing process of bamboo plywood generally includes the following steps:

    1. Raw Material Selection: Typically, bamboo that has grown for about five years is selected, as it possesses excellent toughness and hardness.

    2. Bamboo Slat Preparation: Large-diameter Moso bamboo is cross-cut into sections, milled to remove outer nodes, then longitudinally split into 2–4 pieces before milling out inner nodes. The sections undergo steaming to soften, followed by heating and pressing in a top-loading single-layer flat press to flatten curved bamboo pieces into planes. Finally, double-sided planing processes them into uniform-thickness slats free of green and yellow bamboo layers.

    3. Pressure-Drying: To prevent bamboo strips from curling and warping during drying, a pressure-drying process and equipment are employed. Wet bamboo strips are heated under pressure, and upon pressure release, moisture is expelled and free shrinkage occurs.

    4.Bamboo Sheet Sizing: Apply water-soluble phenolic resin adhesive to bamboo sheets using a four-roll coating machine, with an adhesive application rate of 300-350 g/m² (both sides). To facilitate the formation of an adhesive film on the surface after sizing and prevent adhesive flow during hot pressing, add 1%-3% fillers such as wheat flour or soybean flour to the adhesive.

    5. Assembling the Blanks: Manual assembly is employed, strictly adhering to the principles of symmetry, odd-numbered layers, and perpendicular grain orientation between adjacent layers. High-quality bamboo strips are reserved for the front panel, while lower-grade strips are used for the back panel. Both front and back panels feature the green side facing outward and the yellow side inward. For core panel assembly, adjacent bamboo strips must alternate between green and yellow sides in sequence.

    6. Pre-pressing and Hot Pressing:

    ①Pre-pressing: To prevent defects such as core separation or gaps caused by displacement during slab loading into the hot press, slabs must undergo pre-pressing at room temperature after assembly and prior to hot pressing. This process bonds them into a cohesive material.

    ②Hot Pressing: Employing a hot-to-hot bonding process, the hot pressing temperature is approximately 140°C, with a unit pressure of 2.5–3.0 MPa. The hot pressing duration is calculated based on the finished panel thickness, typically at 1.1 min/mm. To prevent the occurrence of “bubbling,” a three-stage pressure reduction process is usually applied during the latter phase of hot pressing.

    7. Sawing and Packaging: Hot-pressed bamboo plywood blanks are cut to specified dimensions on the sawing table, then neatly stacked with putty powder applied between layers. Packaging typically follows a 5-vertical-by-2-horizontal pattern, though custom arrangements can accommodate client requests. Wooden blocks are placed underneath to facilitate transport and prevent damage during handling. Specific manufacturing processes and parameters may vary between producers. For instance, some manufacturers first weave bamboo strips into mats or screens before proceeding with subsequent steps like drying, resin impregnation, and panel assembly.
